SSDI Eligibility Requirements

social security benefit claimSocial Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is offered to people who’re unable to work because of a disability.

What’s a Disability?

To ensure you’re eligible for SSDI, you first need to learn if you meet the disability standards defined by Social Security Disability Insurance.

Just because a person is unable to work due to a health condition they don’t necessarily mean they’re eligible for the SSDI program.

If a person wants to be considered disabled to benefit from SSDI, they must be suffering from their disability for at least 12 months or must be permanently disabled. i.e., they should have a permanent disability that prevents them from working or performing any activity that requires physical effort.

Real-World Scenario

If, for instance, a person has been in the administrative department of their company for more than 15 years and needs to take a round around the office to monitor everything or simply move around to carry out some chores. Now, if they get disabled in an accident and can’t perform the same duties any longer, they may think they’re disabled, but the Social Security Administration may not consider them ‘disabled.’ They may not grant you the benefits as you can still opt for other jobs that don’t require you to move around; such as the job of a receptionist.

You can check “Blue Book,” published by The Social Security Administration, to learn about different medical conditions and listings that can qualify a person for acquiring SSDI benefits in the country.

Work Credits

A person’s disability alone can’t make them eligible for SSDI benefits. Their work credits play a significant role in determining whether or not they’re qualified for the benefits. An individual must have earned sufficient work credits during their employment period.
