Benefits for People with Disabilities and Their Parents

There are several federal and state programs in the US for people caring for a child with disabilities. These programs offer a list of benefits for people with disabilities and their families.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

It’s a federal program in the US that provides monthly payments for people with disabilities who have little to no income.

This program is designed for older adults and children who haven’t hit age 18 and if they have a medical condition that meets the SSA’s definition of disability. A young person’s resources and income should meet the SSA’s eligibility criteria to qualify for the SSI program. The amount you receive with this program is different in every US state. It’s important to note here that West Virginia, North Dakota, Mississippi, and Arizona don’t supplement SSI.

Some other programs that the families of children with disabilities may benefit from include:

Social Security Disability Benefits/Social Security Survivor Benefits

If a child with disabilities loses their parent, or if they retire or get diagnosed with a disability, the child can acquire their Social Security benefits.

Temporary Assistance

The program “Temporary Assistance for Needy Families” offers funds and other financial services to help parents with low-income cover their expenses.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) offers an electronic debit card to low-income families. If you meet the SNAP eligibility requirements, you can get this card and purchase food easily. This program was formerly known as the ”food stamps program.”

While the program isn’t only offered to people with disabilities, it does offer some special provisions for households with an older adult or a member with a disability.

Medicaid

This is a public health insurance program that offers healthcare coverage to individuals and families with a low income.

In several US states, if a child with disabilities collects SSI, they become qualified for Medicaid as well. However, some states also check if they meet the program’s income and resource requirements.
